Ertel Ray  Hall Jr.
A Celebration of Life for Ertel Ray Hall, Jr., age 90, of Enid, is 10:00 am, Monday, June 20, 2016 at Emmanuel Baptist Church, 2505 W Owen K Garriott Rd. Reverend Ted Kuschel will officiate, with burial in Memorial Park Cemetery, Enid. Military honors will be provided by the United States Navy Honor Guard. The family will receive friends on Sunday, June 19, 2016 from 6:00 to 7:00 pm at Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home.
Ertel Ray Hall, Jr was born April 16, 1926 in Heavener, OK to Ertel Ray Hall, Sr., and Doris (Goode) Hall, and passed away Wednesday, June 15, 2016 in Enid. His brother was Selan Hall and sister was Doris Jo Hall. They moved to Stilwell, OK in 1931 where he attended Stilwell City Schools. In 1940 while serving as a page from January to May at the age of 14 in the state capitol, he met “Alfalfa” Bill Murray, a past governor of Oklahoma. When asked for his autograph, Gov Murray said he would sign his autograph only if Mr Hall purchased his book. Ertel enlisted in the US Navy in 1944 and during World War II served in the Navy Air Corp in Patrol Bombing Squadron 148 in the Pacific theater and was honorably discharged May 10, 1946. Ertel asked District Judge Herbert T Williams for his daughter’s hand in marriage, and he and Carolyn Jean Williams were married by his father, Reverend Ertel R Hall, Sr in Stilwell on December 21, 1947. He earned his B S and Master’s degree in Education and from Phillips University in Enid, OK. Additional hours were earned at both OSU and OU. Ertel served in the public school system as a teacher/principal/superintendent for 37 years. He taught school one year in Covington, OK; was Principal/Superintendent at North Enid for thirteen years, was Principal at Carver and Roosevelt Elementary schools in Enid for one year, Principal at Longfellow Jr High for five years, taught school at Waller Jr High for two years, was Principal at Glenwood Elementary for ten years, and was Principal at Wilson Elementary for 5 years before retiring in 1985. During summer months for 20 years he worked at Union Equity Elevator Z. He was a life member of the National Educational Association, member for many years of the State and National Superintendents Associations, and the Secondary and Elementary Principals Associations. He was Past President of the Garfield County Education Association, Past President of Garfield County School Masters Association, and Past Vice President of the Northern Oklahoma Education Association, and served as Chairman of the State Ethics Commission for the Oklahoma Education Association. He was a member of the American Legion, and was Charter-Member and Past President of the North Enid Lions Club. He was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church where he served on the Personnel Committee and was a member of the Auditorium Sunday School Class His passions were reading, photography and football - high -school, college and professional. His favorite was OU except when they played OSU, as well as when Navy played Army. He lived past his 90th birthday and died June 15, 2016. His wife Carolyn Jean of 47 ½ years preceded him in death on Easter Sunday, his birthday, April 16, 1995. Ertel’s family wishes to thank the courteous, kind and professional people during his time at St Mary’s Hospital, Greenbrier Village and the attentive and compassionate people of Ross Hospice. He is survived by daughter, Carol Lynn and her husband Bruce Gragert at Edmond, his son, Ertel Ray Hall, III and his wife Pam at Midwest City, and his daughter Mary Lisa Markes at Enid. He is also survived by grandchildren, Tiffany Jean and husband Brian Wagner, Megan Renee Gragert, Gavin Kyle Hall and wife Sami, Jared Lee Markes and wife Sarah, Lacey Mae and husband Terry Young, and Jacob Joseph Markes and wife Courtney; and five great grandchildren, Gaige and Laeken Wagner, Boston and Breckyn Hall, and Bentley Young. Surviving are nieces Jogene Reed Marti and husband Richard at Farmington, Arkansas and Mareese Hall Robbins and husband Jack at Carthage, MO.
While living at his home, Ertel especially enjoyed breakfast at Burger King with his friends Floyd Wagner and his daughter Susan, Marion and Earleen McCune, Don and Donna Strunk, and Dan and Jane Dunn.
Ertel’s request is that memorials be made to the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation with Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home serving as custodian of the funds.
