Obituary for Robert W. Sumner

Robert W. Sumner
Robert W. (Bob) Sumner of Enid passed away on May 9, 2018. A beloved husband, father and grandfather he will be greatly missed. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 am Monday, May 14, 2018 at St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church, Enid Oklahoma. A Celebration of Life will then be held at 3:00 pm on Monday, May 14, 2018 at the First Christian Church in Luther, Oklahoma with burial to follow in the Luther Cemetery. The family will receive guests on Sunday, May 13, 2018 from 3:00 to 5:00 pm at Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home.
Bob attended Meridian, Chickasha Public Schools and graduated from Luther High School. He then attended Oklahoma State University and Central State College (UCO).
Bob met the love of his life Charlotte Hartman in Luther during the summer of 1961. They dated for six weeks and knew they wanted to be together for the rest of their lives. They were happily married for 57 years. Bob was proud of his three strong and supportive daughters Loren, Angela and Jenny. He exhibited a great passion for life, but his life was not complete until the birth of his grandchildren Chet, Trippy, Will, Izzy, Hayes and Charlotte. Bob served as the Executive Director of both the Oklahoma and Garfield County Department of Agriculture (ASCS). He then began a successful career in the oil and gas industry. He owned and operated Horne Oil Company until his retirement. He served on the Board of the Oklahoma Petroleum Marketers Association and the CITGO Oil Marketers Council. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Oklahoma Environmental Services.
Bob was active in the community. He served as the Mayor of Luther and was a member of both the Luther and Enid Lion’s Club. He served on the Oakwood Country Club Board of Directors. He was a Grand National Quail Club Board Member and Dog Handler. Bob served as an honorary Commander at Vance Air Force Base. As a life-long Democrat, he was active in the party.
Bob was an avid quail, pheasant and dove hunter. For the past 17 years he enjoyed his annual pheasant hunt hosted by the Miles Family in Conde, South Dakota. He had fond memories of his dove hunts in Argentina and Mexico, but his most special bird hunts were with family and friends on the plains of Oklahoma. On the golf course, he was a fierce competitor. He had a single digit handicap for his golfing career. Bob and Charlotte loved to travel, visiting many countries with Scotland and Africa being his favorite.
Bob will be remembered for his quick wit, mischievousness, and quiet generosity. He survived a rattlesnake bite, buck shot to the chest while hunting, cancer, but finally succumbed to Pulmonary Fibrosis.
Bob is survived by his wife of 57 years, Charlotte Sumner; three daughters, Loren Sumner Kruger and husband James Kruger, of San Antonio, Texas; Angela Sumner Riddle of San Antonio, Texas; Jenny Sumner Ulm and husband John Ulm, of San Antonio, Texas; six grandchildren, Chet Riddle, Phillip (Trippy) Devanney, William Riddle, Isabella Ulm, Hayes Ulm, and Charlotte O’Dell; one great-grandson, Avery Luckenbill; one brother, Bernie Sumner (Mickey); three sisters, Sharion Keely (John); Sue Coen; and Phillis McGrew (Ron); as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
A special thanks to Bob and Charlotte’s family for the love they showed during his illness, and to Sherry Scott and her family for always being a part of ours. The family would also like to thank Thomas Curtis (TC) Hartman, Bob’s adored nephew, he was with Bob through family sleep-overs, donut runs, Thunder games, and was by his side until the end.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in Bob’s name may be made to the Luther, Oklahoma Chapter of the Future Farmers of America with Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home serving as custodian of the funds.
