A Memorial Service for Emily Edith (Mittelstet) Record, age 93, of Colorado Springs, formerly of Enid, will be 10:30 am, Saturday, December 29, 2018 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Enid, OK, with Pastor Kenneth Wade officiating. Emily’s family will lay her to rest in a private ceremony in Memorial Park Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home.
Emily Edith (Mittelstet) Record was born to Carl and Amelia (Sonnenberg) Mittelstet in Major County, Oklahoma at home on February 25, 1925, and, peacefully went home to the Lord on Tuesday, November 20, 2018 in Colorado Springs, Colorado. She was the 11th of 15 children and was raised near Aline, Oklahoma where she graduated from high school. She was baptized into the Christian faith in June, 1941 at the Saron Mennonite Church in Orienta, OK. She was confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Enid, on March 22, 1945. Emily always said that her siblings were her best friends. They each worked very hard on the farm but had a lot of fun too. Besides growing and canning their own food, Emily worked in the family Cook Shack, baking pies and cakes and serving harvest crews. Her family enjoyed her famous meringue pies throughout her life.
Emily married her high school sweetheart, Harold G. Kiner, on March 14, 1943. Harold was tragically killed on October 2, 1944 in WWII earning the nation’s highest military decoration of the Medal of Honor posthumously for his heroism and sacrifice. Emily later met and married Robert (Bob) E. Record, also a WWII Veteran. They married on November 25, 1945 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Enid. They had two children, Cynthia (Cindy) and then 17 years later, Traci Lin. Emily and Bob moved to Ponca City in 1947 where they lived until 1974. During these years, Emily worked tirelessly as a bookkeeper, church secretary, and assisting Bob in the real estate and insurance business. She was also owner and operator of Enid Hearing Aid for several years after moving back to Enid.
Emily remained active in the Lutheran church throughout her life. Her faith was central to her life. She embodied the principles of the Christian fruit of the spirit (Gal. 5:22-23): love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. She lived a life of sacrifice and caring for others, beginning with her family. She wore through 3 bread makers baking bread for others! She was a greeter at church, delivered meals on wheels, generously donated to Hope Outreach, the women’s center, as well as sending greeting cards to parishioners as part of her Lutheran Women’s Missionary League Circle. She enjoyed years of water walking at the YMCA with friends.
Emily loved beauty, especially flower gardening and flower arranging. She, with her siblings, made their own fun by playing cards, canning sand plum jelly, salsa, and the like. Although she experienced tragic losses of 2 husbands and a daughter, Traci, the Lord blessed her with a strong faith and acceptance of things in life. Her memory was sharp when it came to hymns of the faith, which gave her much comfort and peace in her latter years. Her pride and joy was her grandson Jeff and his family. She especially enjoyed watching her great grandson Kyle grow up. Her life of faithfulness, caring, unselfishness and forgiveness lives on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
Emily is survived by daughter Cynthia (Cindy) and her husband, Charles Meek of Colorado Springs, Co as well as grandson Jeffrey Scott and wife Jenna Meek, and great grandson Kyle Stanton Meek, also of Colorado; two sisters: Doris Holle of Fairmont, OK and Marjorie Green of Steilacoom, WA, and sister-in-law Esther Mittelstet of Enid, and many nephews and nieces and their families.
She is predeceased by husband Harold G. Kiner, husband Robert E. Record, and daughter Traci Lin Kent as well as siblings Herman (died as infant), Richard, Olga, Elfreda (Fritz), Ed, Reinhold (Runt), Wilma, Johnnie, C.F. (Freddie), Clara, Martha and Amelia Grace (Gracie).
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Paul’s Lutheran School Scholarship Fund or the St. Paul’s Lutheran LWML with Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home serving as custodian of the funds.
