Obituary

A Celebration of Life for Squire Washington Utsler, age 93 years, of Enid, is 11:00 am, Monday, January 14, 2019 at Emmanuel Enid with Reverend Wade Burleson officiating. The United States Navy Honors Team will provide military honors. Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home.

Squire was born on Friday, March 13, 1925 in Enid, to Ora Clarence and Vernis Viola (Carter) Utsler. He always said every Friday the 13th was his lucky day! He graduated from Enid High School in 1943 and joined the United States Navy on August 18, 1943 to serve in WWII. Because of his accuracy and skill with a gun during boot camp, the United States decided he could best serve as a machine gunner in the Marine Corp. He was then sent to Marine boot camp in Camp Pendleton, California. After surviving WWII, he returned to marry his high school sweetheart, Dorothy Lee Horrall on New Year’s Day, 1946. They had just celebrated their 73rd wedding anniversary two days before his death.

Squire was a civil engineer at Vance Air Force Base for many years until he decided to pursue his dream of starting a fish hatchery. This led to designing and building lakes, including Willow Lake and Fountain Lake of Enid; Fox Lake in Edmond and Squire’s Landing in Stillwater. He was gifted in being able to take a piece of raw land and turn it into a beautiful place with a rustic resort-like feel. Squire was an avid sportsman who loved to hunt and fish and train his Brittany hunting dogs. He was a member of the Grand National Quail Club and hosted celebrities like Roy Clark and Sam Walton at his Wind Canyon Ranch near the Salt Plains of Oklahoma.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Utsler, of the home in Enid; two children, Lori Lee Lenz and husband Joel of Enid; Hal W. Utsler and wife Oleta of Ringwood; three grandchildren, Kelsi Lenz of Chicago, IL; Colby Lenz and wife Allyson of Overland Park, KS; and Tyler Lenz of Oklahoma City. He also leaves three great-grandchildren who he was so proud of, Tyler’s son Ezra Lee, and Colby’s two girls, Paisley Jayne and Aubrey Mae.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Ora and Vernis Utsler; sister, Betty Jo Harmon and her husband Francis Harmon; and two nephews, Mark and Joe Lynn Harmon.

Memorials in Squire’s name may be made to the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society with Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home serving as custodian of the funds.

Lori, I’m so sorry for your loss. I was the receptionist at Golden Oaks for a couple of years and got to see Squire almost daily. You showed love for he and Dorothy every time you were there; he sure loved you. God bless you and your family. You will be in my prayers🙏.

Squire and Dorothy have always been two of my favorites. Over the years I have had the privilege to know Squire and Dorothy's children and many of their grandchildren. In 2012 my brother Chad and I were blessed with being able to purchase a ranch property in Grant and Alfalfa County Oklahoma that included the Wind Canyon property that Squire and Dorothy put together. Every time I go up to the ranch I appreciate the hard work and dedication that Squire put into this property. We work hard to continue his legacy in our stewardship of Wind Canyon. Thank you Squire, you will be missed. To all of the Utlser family please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers. Jed Dillingham

Spuire and I worked together at Vance. He was my boss and I remember him as a hard worker, a fair boss and a good friend. We spent many hours working together and hunting together. I regret that our paths went separate ways in later life. I consider it my loss. I offer the family my condolences and will pray for comfort in the days ahead. J.C. Bowen
