Gregory Patrick Sheik, born November 20, 1954 in Ponca City, OK to Robert Eugene and Jennie Katherine (Katie) (Hamand) Sheik, wrote the final chapter in his Book of Life on Monday, January 28, 2019. He began life in Newkirk and was later raised in Carmen, OK. Greg was the oldest of four boys and was entrusted from an early age to watch over Eric, Vincent and Max to ensure their safety and wellbeing. This responsibility was a foundation of his character, and certainly has shown throughout his life as a brother, husband to Janet, father to Cody and Cara, grandfather to Joplin, Memphis, and Aurora, and finally during his career with the Department of Corrections and Oklahoma Corporation Commission.

Greg had an inquisitive mind, a quiet and keen sense of humor, a passionate love of music and playing musical instruments. He loved the occasional snort of nice Bourbon. In his younger years, he loved to hunt, fish, and camp. He was active in Boy Scouts, achieving the rank of Eagle Scout. Later in life, Greg shared his love of the outdoors by serving as Scoutmaster to Troop 330 and was recognized for his service in the Order of the Arrow by receiving the Silver Beaver Medal. Greg was always serving and donating his time to others wherever he could, serving on the Carmen City Council and as Mayor.

Greg, better known as “Poppi” to his grandchildren, loved spending time with them watching Saturday morning cartoons, especially Tom and Jerry, and eating pancakes with them. If you were to ask him on any given day, “What’s your favorite afternoon activity?”, he would without question respond, “having popsicles with the grandkids”.

Greg is survived by his wife Janet Sheik of Carmen; son Cody and family, Katie and Aurora Sheik (Duluth, MN); daughter Cara and family, Nick, Joplin and Memphis Bradt (Alva, OK); Brothers, Eric Sheik and wife Cathy (Carmen, OK); Vincent Sheik and wife Janie (Blanchard, OK); Max Sheik and wife Kim (Las Cruces, NM); Uncle, Kenny Sheik and wife Janet (Newkirk, OK; step mother, Helen Sheik (Weatherford, OK), step Grandmother Violet Hamand (Enid, OK); and other beloved family and friends.

The family wishes to thank with deep and sincere appreciation all who have helped Greg on his journey with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis Disease. Most notably Dr.’s Sarah Matousek and Brian Whitson and their great staff, the wonderful people at Bass Pavilion LTAC, Integris Home Health, and Hospice Circle of Love. Memorial contributions may be made to the Carmen Memorial Park fund with Ladusau-Evans serving as custodian. Condolences can be made at .

Greg was a wonderful Scoutmaster I worked with him for many years at the Scout Office. He was always pleasant to deal with and had a wonderful attitude, and will surely be missed. I send prayers to the family.

Dear Janet and Family I am so sorry to hear of Greg's passing. It was so good to visit with him at Bob's funeral and get brought up to date on the family. I went to school at the Catholic school in Newkirk with Greg through the 6th or 7th grade-up to the point of his family moving to Carmen. I always really admired Greg, he was so quiet and kind. Then on our 8th grade graduation trip, the whole class stopped to visit Greg. It was so neat! Please send me a text at 580-383-0001 when his services at scheduled or send an email to Our Condolences and Prayers to all your family. Love

Janet, please know that you are my prayers. I know my mom, Mary Lou, thought very highly of Greg and he was very helpful to my daughter when she lived out there.

Greg was the kind of man that makes a positive difference in people’s lives. He was one of the best Scoutmasters and men that I ever had the privilege of knowing. He was kind and gentle to young Scouts and had a larger than life personna amongst the folks who worked with him. He helped me get my first job out of college as a C.O. at BJCC in Alva and was always a pillar of strength and reason when dealing with problem inmates. Even though I didn’t get to see him nearly as much as I would have liked in his later years, I always felt a strong sense of friendship and fellowship with Greg. He was the kind of man in which I still inspire to be to this very day. Greg, I will miss you my old friend. Thanks for all the great memories and life lessons sir.
