Obituary for Kendall Eldo Campbell (Campbell)
The funeral service celebrating and honoring the life of Kendall Eldo Campbell, 99, of Enid, will be 2:00p.m., Monday, July 8, 2019 at Ladusau-Evans Chapel with Rev Randy Mitchell officiating. Burial will follow in the White Cemetery in Hunter, Oklahoma. Services are under the direction of Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home.
Kendall was born August 6, 1919 at a farm home Southwest of Hunter to Wilbur and Mae (Bacon) Campbell and went to be with his Lord and Savior, July 4, 2019. He moved with the family to a farm Northeast of Hunter near Salt Fork. He graduated from Hunter High School and went to welding school in Wichita, Kansas.
In January 1941 Kendall enlisted in the United States Army and was assigned to the 45th Infantry Division. After war was declared in December 1941, his tour of duty was extended for the duration of the war.
While on leave in the fall of 1942 he married his high school sweetheart Mary Phillis Young at her parent’s home. Phillis traveled with Kendall to his post in Massachusetts and then to New York before his orders came to join the war effort in North Africa.
Kendall saw action in North Africa, Sicily, and Italy before being severely wounded on November 9, 1943 at Venafro, Italy. Kendall was in a hospital in Naples, Italy and North Africa before being transported back to the United States.
He was authorized to wear the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with two bronze stars, the American Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and the Purple Heart. He was honorably discharged August 19, 1944.
In September 1944, he was employed by the Garfield County Commissioners as an Assistant County Engineer. In 1947 he had the opportunity to rent and later own a farm Northwest of Hunter where he and Phillis lived and raised their family until building a house in Hunter in 1961.
In 1955 he was appointed Postmaster of the Hunter Post Office where he served until his retirement in 1979. He also continued farming while serving as postmaster and after retirement from the postal service.
Kendall was an active member of the Hunter United Methodist Church and served the church in many capacities. He was a Scoutmaster for the local Boy Scout Troop, a charter member of the American Legion Post, a member of the Hunter Lions Club and a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans.
Kendall liked to hunt and fish and spent many summer vacations fishing for walleye in Minnesota. He and Phillis liked to travel and visited all 50 states, as well as Europe.
In 2004, they sold their home in Hunter and moved to The Commons Retirement Center in Enid. Kendall spent his final days surrounded by family and friends at The Commons.
Kendall is survived by his wife of 76 years, Mary Phillis of The Commons; his son, Jerry and wife Carolyn of Wichita, KS; three daughters, Ann Pope and husband Jerry of Woodward, OK, Sue Buhler and husband Don of Pratt, KS, and Cindy Irwin and husband Gayland of Borger, TX; 9 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild.
