Obituary for Virginia Spencer
Memorial and graveside services for Virginia Shawley Spencer will be held on Saturday, November 2, 2019, the day before her 100th birthday. A graveside service will be at 10:00 a.m. at the Nash New Home Cemetery. A memorial service will be at 1:30 p.m. at the Central Christian Church of Enid in the chapel.
Virginia Shawley Spencer, 99, died on September 30, 2019, in Avon Lake, Ohio. She grew up in Nash, Oklahoma, the youngest of three children born to David and Bess (Kinder) Mills. Virginia graduated from Nash High School as the Valedictorian of the Class of 1937 and graduated from Oklahoma A&M (now OSU) with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in music. She married Veril Shawley in August, 1942, and they moved to Wichita, Kansas, where she worked for Beech Aircraft during World War II. At the end of the war, they moved to Enid where they raised their two children. She was an Enid elementary classroom teacher at Taft and Hayes and finished her career as an elementary music teacher. After her retirement, she and Veril lived part of the year on their farm near Nash until his death in 1989. She married LeRoy Spencer of Hunter in October, 1992, and they lived in Enid. LeRoy passed away in 2005.
Virginia was an active member of Central Christian Church for over 73 years. She loved playing the piano for her Sunday school class, visiting with friends and neighbors, and keeping a tidy home and garden. For many years she attended Guild meetings, KKI, Friday Friends, and Nash Club. She was a big OSU fan and particularly loved watching basketball games.
Virginia’s family loved to hear her tell stories about her childhood and their own. She was the keeper of family stories - remembering every interesting, funny, and heartwarming thing said by her children, grandchildren and extended family. She loved to laugh and her friends and family loved to laugh with her.
Virginia drove herself to church, Braum’s, and hair appointments until she was 96. She lived independently in her home before moving to The Commons a few months before her 98th birthday. In 2018, Virginia moved to Avon Lake, Ohio to be closer to her daughter, Marilyn.
We will miss hearing Virginia at the piano, eating her delicious apple cake, and playing dominoes together. Most of all, we will miss her smile. Her daily indulgence in Braum’s ice cream contributed to her ability to live a long, happy and healthy life. Think of Virginia the next time you enjoy a scoop of dream cooler or rainbow sherbet.
Virginia is survived by her son, Dr. Richard (Cynthia) Shawley, Stillwater, and her daughter, Marilyn (Ron) Sommer, Avon Lake, Ohio; grandchildren, Diane (Chad) Aldrich; Kristen (Jason) Retter; Scott (Stephanie) Sommer; and Eric (Cortny) Sommer; and great-grandchildren, Joshua and Jonathan Aldrich, Ty and Max Sommer, and Paige Sommer; stepdaughter, Lynette (Dan) Mikesh, Clinton, Iowa; stepdaughter-in-law, Frances Spencer, Enid, step-grandchildren, Jon Richardson (Becky); Rev. Scott Spencer; and Stephanie Spencer; and several step-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was pre-deceased by her husbands; brother, Dr. Victor Mills; sister, Vivian Anderson; and stepson, Allen Spencer.
