Letha Marie Jones-Schantz went to be with the Lord on November 28, 2020 at home with members of family by her side. Letha Marie Hendrix was born on Jan. 11, 1928 in Thomas, Oklahoma to Clyde and Ercel Hendrix. She and Earland Earnest Jones were married on May 15, 1946 at Watonga, Oklahoma. To this union six kids were born.
Letha grew up living above the Thomas Hospital which was owned and operated by her grandfather. W.J. Omer, M.D. Her family moved into a house in Thomas 6 months before she and Earland were married and moved to the farm west of Thomas with no electricity, no running water and she did not know how to cook. They farmed in Thomas until August 1965 when they moved to the ranch southwest of Pawnee, OK.

During her time in Pawnee she worked for DonL Drug, Jerry’s Studio and Pawnee Bill’s Ranch before establishing “Grammy’s Sewing Basket” in 1973. Grammy as she became known to many customers, friends and neighbors closed her store in 1989 and worked with her daughter Nila and son-in-law Steve at Bar None Designs. She later worked in the fabric department for Cheatham’s.
Letha moved to Enid in 2000 after Earland passed to be closer to her daughter. She married Ernest Schantz on Nov. 26, 2005 in Enid, OK. They moved to Golden Oaks Retirement Center in 2016 where they enjoyed making new friends and taking bus trips across the country. Ernest died Aug. 22, 2018.

Letha is survived by her six children Terry and GeoReta Jones of Clinton, OK. Debby and Allen Sharp of Stillwater, OK, Nila and Steve Thomas of Pawhuska, OK, Brenda Kelly of Ponca City, Troy and Andrea Jones of Mountain View, OK and Earla and Tim Haggard of Enid. Her grandchildren, Zach, Kylie, Bryan, Chad, Tyler, Joe, Beth, Kim, Cody, Frank, Natalie and Ethan and spouses and twelve great-grandkids. Letha is also survived by two stepchildren: Merle Schantz of Wheatland, OK and Darla Schantz--Carter of Yukon, OK. Five step grandchildren, Leslie, Brett, Laney, Kip and Lane and two great step grandchildren.

My husband and I are former residents of Golden Oaks and Letha was our next door neighbor. She was such a sweet lady and I went over to her apartment often for visits. She was always sharing stories of her life. She was such a classy lady! My condolences, love and prayers go out to the family. God's Blessings to all of you as a family. 🙏✝️

Letha was married to our Uncle Ernest. She was a gracious hostess and always had a smile on her face.

Letha was a sweet, nurturing lady with a fine mind and an optimistic, can-do spirit. She had many admirable qualities, but I will remember her best as a teller of stories. She was the oldest living Hendrix and her stories stretched back additional generations. My favorites were the ones she told about her colorful grandfather and his early experiences in Oklahoma with dugouts and stolen children and the first house in Clinton, and about her great grandparents.

My wife and I are recent Golden Oaks residents. When walking our dog Angel one evening, Letha was standing outside and insisted we come over and visit. She wanted to meet our dog! Surprised us when she reached down and picked up Angel. Cuddled our dog, explaining she recently had lost her puppy. 'Asking where she was from, she started explaining originally where she was from, Thomas, and where Thomas located. I said wait, I grew up in Medford and we used to play some hard fought football games against Thomas. She said that was right, and she had attended some of those Medford games! She also talked about the Pawnee ranch and some of her life. Sweet lady. Our thoughts and prayers to your families at her passing.
