Obituary for Virgil Isaac Shafer
A Memorial Service for Virgil I. and Barbara A. Shafer, will be 3:00 pm, Saturday, November 12, 2022 at the United Methodist Church in Wakita, Oklahoma with Pastor Alan Baker officiating. Burial will follow in Wakita Cemetery, with Military Honors provided by the United States Army Honors team, under the direction of Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home.
Virgil was born February 21, 1936 in Wakita to Floyd and Edna Mae (Webb) Shafer, and passed away Saturday, November 5, 2022 in Enid, Oklahoma. Barbara was born May 9, 1944 in San Jose, California to Thomas and Lucille (Madewell) Lindsey, and passed away Tuesday, November 8, 2022 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
Virgil attended Gore Public Schools, graduating in 1956. He was drafted into the United States Army in 1958 and served two years, being honorably discharged in 1960. He went to Tulsa Welding School and upon completion, he worked with his dad, and a company in Wichita, Kansas. He worked for several different welding jobs including the Nevada Test Site, where he retired from in 1998.
Barbara graduated from Deer Creek Public Schools, graduating in 1962. She then took a waitressing job at the Bon Ton in Medford, Oklahoma. Later, Barbara went to college and earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing from Northern Oklahoma College in Tonkawa, Oklahoma. She worked in Las Vegas, Nevada at several hospitals and as Director of Nursing at Life Care Centers of America, and in Enid, she worked for a while at St. Mary’s Hospital. She was the Director of Nursing at Community Health Center in Wakita, where she retired after 20 years.
Barbara and Virgil met at the Bon Ton. They were married September 29, 1962 at the Medford Baptist Church. They had three children, Virgil (“Ike”), Teresa, and Geoffrey.
Following their retirements, Virgil loved welding and continued to find projects to keep himself busy; Barbara enjoyed reading and teaching her granddaughter Jessica how to can homemade jelly. They both enjoyed spending time with their family and each other.
Virgil and Barbara are survived by two children, Virgil I. Shafer, Jr. and wife Paula, of San Antonio, Texas; Teresa Shafer, of Tulsa, Oklahoma; three grandchildren, Jessica Sykes of San Antonio; Lindsey Krehbiel and husband Clayton, of Wakita, Oklahoma; Christina Coulter and husband Russ, of Tulsa, Oklahoma; six great-grandchildren, Kaitlynn, Geoffrey, Dylan, Riley, Asher, and Rhys. Barbara is survived by two sisters, Faye Elliott and husband Al, of Luther, Oklahoma and Mary Buxton, of Lamont, Oklahoma; brother, Steve Scrimsher, of Easton, Kansas; as well as several nieces, nephews, and many “adopted” grandkids. Virgil and Barbara are preceded in death by a son and grandson, both named Geoffrey.
Memorial contributions in Virgil’s name may be made to the American Cancer Society and contributions for Barbara may be made to the American Heart Association with Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home serving as custodian of the funds.
