Billie Dunkerson

June 23, 1938 — May 26, 2025

Funeral services for Billie Gayle Dunkerson, age 86, of Waukomis, will be 2:00pm Tuesday, June 3, 2025, at The Christian Church of The Covenant with Pastor Paul Ragle, Pastor Pat Sutherlin, and Pastor Kenneth Wade officiating. Burial will follow in Waukomis Cemetery under the direction of Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home.

Billie was born June 23, 1938, in Ponca City, Oklahoma, to Gale and Pauline (Caughlin) Johnson and passed away on Monday, May 26, 2025 in Waukomis.

Billie attended several schools during her early years before moving to Enid, Oklahoma, where she graduated from Enid High School in 1956. In 1963, she made her home in Waukomis, Oklahoma, and became a devoted member of the Waukomis Christian Church. Known for her leadership and dedication to youth and community, Billie served as the 4-H Leader for many years and was actively involved in countless activities that she either sponsored or helped lead.

A trailblazer in local education, Billie became the first woman to serve on the school board for Waukomis Public Schools, where she completed two dedicated five-year terms. On May 16, 1992, she married her beloved husband, John Dunkerson. After their marriage, she joined the Christian Church-Covenant and found great joy in singing with the Melody Girls.

Billie had a spirited love for playing cards-her competitive nature was well known and admired. She also treasured her adventures with "The Pudder-Girls," a close-knit group whose outings brought her much happiness and laughter. Billie had a deep appreciation for music and rarely passed up the chance to dance-especially with her husband, John. Their love for dancing together was a beautiful expression of their bond. She also found peace in her love of flowers and bird watching, but above all, she cherished her family with all her heart. Her "babies aka grand puppies" lit up her day, bringing her constant joy, laughter, and companionship.

Billie lived her life with joy, compassion, and strength-leaving behind a legacy of service, laughter, and love. Her memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew her, and the light she brought to this world will never be forgotten.

She is preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband, John Dunkerson, children, daughter, Lisa Hersch and husband Troy, of Waukomis, son, Brett Perry and wife Jacquetta, of Waukomis; ten grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; two grand puppies; one sister, Paula Deel, of Newberry Springs, CA, two step-daughters, Elizabeth Sullivan, and Carla Chiles, both of Broken Arrow, OK, and a niece, as well as other cousins and friends.

A proud and passionate superfan of the Oklahoma City Thunder, Billie's loyalty to her team was a part of who she was. In true Billie fashion, she made a special request that all who attend her service wear Thunder-themed attire in her honor.

Memorial contributions in Billie's name may be made to Project 31 (Breast Cancer Support Community) or the Waukomis Cemetery Association with Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home serving as custodian of the funds.
