I learned of Kirby’s passing this morning about the time his service was beginning. I extend my heartfelt sympathy to all his family on this difficult day. May you know that peace of God that passes all our understanding. Although I have not seen Kirby for many years, I share in grieving for him...he was a good, good friend.
I celebrate many of the memories that Gary shared. I count it a true blessing to have grown up in the faith at Bethany UMC...or Bethany EUB as it was known “back in our day.” Bethany celebrated many members from Fairmont/Garber, North Enid, Hunter, Waukomis and Drummond as well as Enid. So every Sunday morning, Sunday evening and Wednesday evening we got to be with our church friends from many different towns and schools. Kirby was one of my closest church friends.
Since Kirby was a year older he always drove us around...many, many miles...but he also had the coolest car...a red ‘63 Chevy Impala with white upholstery! Many Sundays we would make a beeline from church to the Navaho Drive-in for lunch and then head to the Q-spot for an afternoon of playing pool...finishing just in time to head back to church for youth group and Sunday night church. I will NOT share all the mischief we got into with all our other church friends...but we had a great time for sure! With my friend Kirby there was also church camp, youth rallies, jalopy raids, youth trips and double dates. Great times and wonderful memories!
But I believe that we also learned a lot about church back in our early years. We learned that church was not just about sermons, revivals, Bible lessons and catechism class...although those formed a foundation for our faith journeys. Church was also a place you could form lifelong friendships...even if you’re separated by many miles and many years. Friendship truly runs deep and Blest Be... are the Ties That Bind.
On this day, I’m very thankful for my friendship with Kirby. I’m grateful that our paths crossed in a place called Bethany and I look forward to seeing each other again one day.
God’s peace,
Terry Martindale

The Kreie & Roads families were very close friends as we grew up. We spent many special times at the Kreie farm playing cards & eating delicious food. Of course, we have fond memories of the Crusader Class Sunday School Class parties & Bethany EUB church picnics where we kids had the best times! We loved sharing time with Kirby & the whole family.

We were able to reconnect with Kirby when Steve's mom had to go to skilled nursing at Greenbrier as he was doing rehab, too. He & Janet were always playing dominoes; they had the fanciest dominoes I'd ever seen. I even got to play with them--the experts!!

We are so grateful that we got to share in his beautiful memorial service through the webcast. Thankful for this precious tribute to him. It was especially touching to hear his son & brother share their hearts. We love you & pray that the "friend that sticks closer than a brother" will bring you grace, comfort & peace each day.
