My future Father-in-Law
It was 1995, and Everett’s daughter, Julie and I had been dating for a while and were living in Oklahoma City. Everett came down from Wichita for a visit, and Julie thought it would be a good idea for him to get to know me a little better. Since we both enjoyed fishing, she suggested I take her dad to a local lake to spend some bonding time together. Now Everett could be intimidating, especially when it came to the well being of his daughter, and the tremendous grip of his handshake added to that.
The drive to the lake was uncomfortable, at best, with very little conversation. I remember thinking that I really needed to produce some fish out of the short trip in order to impress him, and win his approval.
We got to the lake, and the whole mood changed. We were both in our comfort zones, out in nature, with lines in the water. We were soon exchanging fishing stories, and even though we didn’t catch a thing that trip, we definitely became more comfortable with each other.
Everett, you were a great man, and I am proud to have had you as my father-in-law. We love you, and you will be dearly missed. Chris.
